The following are some of my thoughts regarding 3D chess. I approach
the subject from a top-level overview. I hope to develop a framework
in which to classify some of the common variations. My purpose is to
examine various premises and their consequences.
In thinking of how to extend classic chess into the third dimension,
I offer some premises. Some of these seem obvious and many are
arbitrary. They can all be argued.

Chessboard as used here refers to the full 3D chessboard.

Board usually refers to a 2D horizontal portion of the
chessboard.

file is a column of the chessboard.

rank is a row of the chessboard.

level is a vertical level of the chessboard.

cell is a 3D analog to the 2D board's square.

corner axis is the line which describes the up direction for
the chessboard.
