1   Introduction

The following are some of my thoughts regarding 3D chess. I approach the subject from a top-level overview. I hope to develop a framework in which to classify some of the common variations. My purpose is to examine various premises and their consequences.

In thinking of how to extend classic chess into the third dimension, I offer some premises. Some of these seem obvious and many are arbitrary. They can all be argued.
